ABOUT
Duck isn’t just a band—it’s a collective, a community, and a living expression of what happens when groove, intention, and freedom collide. Duck has grown into one of the region’s most magnetic modern funk acts, known for transforming venues into dance-driven gatherings where the connection between audience and band feels almost ritualistic.
At the center of Duck’s identity is their philosophy of “Funk Prayer.” While it’s not a religious statement, it is spiritual in its own right: a belief that funk can be both a physical phenomenon and a metaphysical one. The groove grounds you; the intention lifts you.
Frontman Donnie Deneil brings the emotional engine. His lyrics—equal parts personal, universal, and cinematic—reflect the stories, affirmations, and vulnerabilities that anchor Duck’s sound. His performances carry the warmth of shared experience, leaning into themes of growth, resilience, romance, grit, and the urgency of being alive. Vocally, he is the spark; energetically, he is the center of gravity. Sam Thompson’s guitar work balances sharp rhythmic precision with soaring melodic firepower. Chuck Rhew brings a multi-dimensional keyboard presence that shifts from vintage soul textures to psychedelic color. Chris Holloway holds down the low end with a tone-forward, melodic approach that makes the groove both wide and warm. And Anthony Ward, behind the drums, who drives the heartbeat of Duck with equal parts finesse, grit, and showmanship. Every member writes. Every member shapes the vision. Every member shares the same intention: to build experiences, not just shows.
Over the years, Duck has grown from a local favorite into a rising force in the Southeast, cultivating a reputation for electric live sets and a fanbase built on word-of-mouth devotion. Supporting artists like Neal Francis, Daniel Donato, and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the band has proven they can energize any stage they touch. It’s a sound built as much for the dance floor as it is for emotional resonance.
For Duck, the studio is a continuation of the stage—another arena for shared intention. Their 2022 EP Moves marked a turning point, capturing the first glimpses of the band’s current identity. Since then, lineup growth, artistic clarity, and a more defined sense of purpose have shaped their evolution.
The group is dropping their debut full-length album, Funk Prayer, April 10th 2026. As Duck looks toward a new chapter—expanded touring, festival stages, and continued artistic evolution—the heart of the project remains unchanged: connection. Whether playing to packed rooms in their home state or new audiences across the country, Duck stands as a reminder that groove can be communal, healing, expressive, and freeing.
And if the mission of Funk Prayer has a thesis, it’s this: come as you are, move as you feel, and let the music carry what words cannot.
